*Farewell, Ma'am A: Beloved UE CBA MNL Accountancy Prof Passes Away*

The University of the East community expresses deep sympathy to the family of Prof. Rosalia GM. Agustin, a longtime professor at the UE College of Business Administration-Manila who passed away last September 25, three weeks after turning 71 last September 4.

”Sally” to her colleagues and friends, Prof. Agustin was one of the most loved professors of UE CBA Manila’s Department of Accounting, Law and Taxation (ACLAT). She was a full-blooded UE Warrior, having earned her degree of Bachelor of Science in Business Administration major in Accounting, Cum Laude, in 1975 from the said college. She passed the licensure examinations for certified public accountants of that same year before going on to earn her degree of Master in Business Administration and take up units of the Doctor in Business Administration program, both at the UE Graduate School.

Prof. Agustin had been Chair of of the aforesaid ACLAT Department and later on became Associate Dean of UE CBA Manila. She had also shared her expertise as a CPA Reviewer in Intermediate Accounting and was one of the authors of the textbook titled A Practice Set in Basic Accounting. She was a very dedicated professor who served UE for more than four decades, earning her last Service Award recognition in 2018 for 40 vears of service to the University, before retiring in 2019.

Her peers, who include close friends and fellow professors Lulu Teh, Liza Fernandez, Fe Reyes, Atty Nida Lucenario and Ma. Teresa De Jesus, say that she will always be remembered and cherished because of her concern for students, smiling face, and good sense of humor and jokes that made everyone burst into laughter. Truly no dull moments with her".

Former UE CBA Manila Dean Ester Ledesma, for one, recalls Prof. Agustin’s “vibrant personality, her ready and winsome smile, and her brand of pout of her lips when she was displeased. She was such a good person, an effective teacher, and a student care advocate. I am positive that she will be among our Intangible Assets in heaven.”

The College’s current Associate Dean, Prof. Neil Salcor, referred to Prof. Agustin as “strict but reasonable. I am glad, though for a short time, to be able to join you in the ACLAT Department. You will be missed,” while Executive Assistant Nora Rodriguez stressed that “We will never forget how kind, loving, jolly and humble you were. Your passion and dedication in teaching Accounting contributed much in producing so many UE Warrior CPAs, who would look for you at testimonial dinners just to thank you.”

Prof. Agustin’s passing has drawn an outpouring of tributes online from many of her former Bachelor of Science in Accountancy (BSA) students who are now CPAs, thankful testaments that she not only taught subjects but also inspired thousands of learners through her encouragements not to give up on their dreams and proving how she made a lasting impact on their lives.

Among these is UE BSA graduate Alma Seril, who commented that “You will be truly be missed, Ma'am A. Thank you for being the inspiration behind my dream of becoming a CPA. I will always remember you as an intelligent, effective and jolly teacher who made a lasting impact on my life."

UE BSA grad Carlo Zapata attests that she "set the standards for me when it comes to accounting. She was an excellent teacher. Everything she said made sense, and you could see how passionate she was about teaching. I learned not only accounting lessons from her but also life lessons that I will carry forever," while Chelsea Arcay says, "Thank you for believing in me. Second year, first day of the first semester, you greeted us and told us na nandoon pa rin kami [in class] kasi naniniwala ka at may nakikita kang potential sa amin. [So] I really wanted to do my best para hindi kita ma-disappoint. Thank you for everything, Ma'am A. You are a big part of who I am today."

Fellow graduate Zayla Badajos says, "Ma'am A was one of my most cherished professors in college. Na-amaze ako kasi ang galing niya. Kahit medyo tough siya, I could see her genuine concern para sa students. Hindi niya lang kami tinuruan sa accounting; ang laking part ng teaching style niya ang pag-hone sa character namin, to keep our integrity intact and to persevere, na hindi kami matututo overnight, at dapat mag-aral nang mabuti. Sa kanya ko na-realize na mas effective ang tough mentor-teacher with a heart. I'm so grateful and honored to have been your student. Mahal ka po namin."

UE BSA graduate and CPA-lawyer Atty. John Paul Wania recalls that, in their Constructive Accounting class with Prof. Agustin, she flipped the syllabus by teaching Correction of Errors ahead of Cash Flow, due to the difficulty of the former. He asserts that he might have failed the subject if Prof. Agustin did not make the said adjustment. Later on, after passing the CPA licensure exam, he became an instructor with international certification and was now teaching Correction of Errors and Cash Flow, realizing how these were now easy to teach thanks to how Prof. Agustin diligently taught them. "Madami ka ng anak na CPA," he concludes.

Those who wish to pay their respects to Prof. Agustin may do so at Dulce Funeral Homes on Jose Abad Santos Avenue in Tondo, Manila, with interment due on October 1, 2025.

Eternal peace be upon you, Ma’am Sally, and boundless thanks for passionately molding countless future Warrior CPAs.

S T A T E M E N T

We in the University of the East join the Filipino nation in seeking the truth and calling for justice and accountability in the midst of emerging allegations of systemic corruption. We affirm our resolute and unequivocal stance on this grave matter, seeing how pervasive misconduct impedes upon numerous facets of our lives and so demands our unyielding attention and proactive engagement.

The University of the East champions and upholds the core values of integrity, accountability and transparency. These fundamental principles have long guided our conduct as we cultivate society’s future leaders from all walks of life into becoming productive, law-abiding and peace-loving citizens of our motherland and the world.

There should be no place in society for officials who break the law or citizens who engage in practices involving the people’s hard-earned taxpayer contributions for wanton enrichment. The mounting revelations on such unethical behavior, complemented by the pursuit of institutional reform, civic engagement and a cultural shift, can bring about the path toward accountability that can heal wounds that have long and systemically plagued the lives of ordinary Filipinos struggling to make ends meet through honest work and decent living.

We thank everyone in the UE community for their passion and fortitude in the ongoing, widespread discourse of this national issue. Such critical thinking and assertions of their entitlements and advocacy for their rights are admirable as they are invaluable.

Combating corruption is undoubtedly arduous, but we will persist by fostering a culture that advocates for honesty and accountability. We thus support efforts at attaining solutions for both the immediate future and the long term through peaceful and orderly means, and condemn actions that will entail violence or harm of any kind on even a single individual.

Not only do we join the hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of voices seeking answers to our rightful questions and supreme justice for any wrongdoing no matter the scale and enormity, we aim to do our part in helping to shape a better Philippines, one filled with so much hope and promise of countless bright tomorrows—not just for a privileged few but for the multitude of Filipinos who call our islands and shores home.

The future we strive for will depend on the wise choices and prudent actions that we undertake today.

*Computer Engineering Warriors Win 1st Runner-up Title in Nat’l Hackathon Tilt!*

A team of five Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering (BSCpE) students of the UE College of Engineering-Manila attained a major milestone by winning the 1st Runner-up title in the national hackathon event Packetworx PacketHacks: Hack the Climate 2025!

Held last September 10-11 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City, this national competition was powered by Packetworx and gathered over 70 teams of students and professionals of companies and startups nationwide to design internet of things (IoT)-based solutions against climate change, all under the theme of “Urban Resilience: Future-Proofing Cities Through IoT & Innovation”. As such, the participants’ computer engineering skills were engaged in a collaborative and fast-paced hacking marathon to design scalable solutions addressing climate change, disaster response, sustainability, and urban challenges.

The competition featured multiple stages—from screening and pitching to prototyping and finals—culminating in the IoT Conference Philippines 2025 held on the said dates.

The UE CEng’g Manila BSCpE team at Hack the Climate 2025 featured Sean Vincent Vien V. Viñas as the team leader and, as members, his fellow fourth-year students Clarizza M. Reyes, Skhart Aye D. Mercado, Paolo B. Barrado and John Paul A. Pascual. This UE team had as adviser Engr. Errol John M. Antonio, the College’s Department Chair for BSCpE.

Our Computer Engineering Warriors passed the initial screening, advanced to the semifinals pitching session held on August 2 during the World of Consumer Electronics Expo also at SMX, securing a spot among the Top 8 finalists, and triumphed in the grand finals as 1st Runner-up―an outstanding achievement considering that this was the first time for UE to join the competition.

The UE CEng’g Manila team’s winning project, AeroBand, is a personal air quality monitoring device that bridges the gap left by stationary air quality stations. Integrated with blockchain technology, it incentivizes users to monitor and contribute to cleaner air, aligning with Sustainable Development Goals/SDGs 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and 13 (Climate Action).

This remarkable achievement showcases the ingenuity, dedication and passion of UE BSCpE students in creating technology for a sustainable and climate-resilient future.

The photo shows (from left) Mr. Viñas, Mr. Barrado, Miss Reyes, Mr. Mercado, Mr. Pascual and Prof. Antonio.

Congratulations and kudos, BSCpE Warriors!
