*Heroism of Filipino Youth to Get Spotlight in UE Caloocan-hosted Conference on Oriang, Pingkian, Goyo*
The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) and the University of the East—through the UE College of Fine Arts, Architecture and Design (CFAD) and the UE Basic Education Department-Caloocan (Basic Ed.-Caloocan)—are inviting everyone in and beyond the UE community to a commemorative, two-day conference titled ‘Batch 1875: Kumperensiyang Pang-Alaala sa Henerasyon nina Oriang, Pingkian at Goyo this incoming week.
Set for Thursday and Friday, November 20-21, 2025, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the UE Caloocan Conference Hall (on the 11th floor of the Tan Yan Kee Academic Building), this historical program will feature panel discussions that will tackle the lives and heroism of Gregoria de Jesus, Emilio Jacinto and Gregorio del Pilar―who were respectively nicknamed Oriang, Pingkian and Goyo―and other historically significant Filipinos who were in 1875, or 150 years ago.
This program is the latest to be hosted by UE Caloocan in cooperation with the NHCP on the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of Gregoria de Jesus, who had played a major role in the Philippine Revolution led by her husband, Andres Bonifacio, acting as secretary of the women’s section and document custodian of the Katipunan. (Note: The Pinoy hero also fondly remembered as the Supremo is the lead individual depicted in the Bonifacio Monument seen in Caloocan City's Monumento Circle, which is approximately a kilometer away from UE Caloocan.)
UE Basic Ed.-Caloocan hosted a symposium about Gregoria de Jesus featuring historian Dr. Xiao Chua, Caloocan Historical and Cultural Studies Association, Inc. Trustee and former President Wogie Pacala, and Oriang granddaughter Maria Paz Santos Vidal of the Buhay Nakpil-Bautista Foundation. This was held last August 20 at the Multipurpose Hall of the Dr. Lucio C. Tan Building.
In further tribute to the said Filipino heroine, the Caloocan Campus-based UE CFAD hosted ‘Oriang sa Silangan’, an artistic and creative exhibit in honor of de Jesus that was opened last September and ran up to this past October, at the College's Chua King Ha Galleries: www.facebook.com/share/p/1AQrvD9ieJ/
The UE CFAD also took part in the advanced screening of ‘Lakambini: Gregoria de Jesus’, an eye-opening, part-documentary, part-dramatic film featuring Lovi Poe, Gina Pareño and Elora Españo alternating as Oriang and which is on its second week in SM Cinemas and other theaters nationwide: www.facebook.com/share/p/1KRhVo4DBN/
Ahead of Nov. 20 and 21, interested ‘Batch 1875’ attendees and participants are requested to register through this link: forms.office.com/r/GUL0ht2srA
Let us honor our esteemed national heroes through this educational and meaningful activity, Warriors!
